Before supermarkets. Before plastic wrap. Before everything was the same everywhere — there were crate labels.
This is an original California citrus crate label — a 1940s lithograph printed by Western Litho Company of Los Angeles for the Jameson Company of Corona, California — Sunkist. It has never been used. Never folded. Never attached to a crate. It is New Old Stock in excellent condition.
The label is lush. Three roses — yellow, pink, and red — are arranged together against a deep navy blue background, bright green leaves around them, a wrapped Sunkist orange in the lower right corner. Where the Upland Pride label gives you one rose in solitary drama, Southland Beauties gives you three, a full arrangement, all three colors of the classic rose palette together. Western Litho Company operated in Los Angeles from 1899 to 1953 and printed some of California's most beautifully composed citrus labels. The name Southland Beauties suits both the roses and the label itself.
A condition note: there is a small piece torn on the bottom and some color missing in the lower right margin — both fully photographed. Please review all images carefully. Two available.
Frame it as floral decor, as vintage rose art, or as a rich and generous piece of 1940s California design. At approximately 10.75 by 10.0 inches it suits a standard 11x14 or 12x12 frame and works beautifully in a dining room, a bedroom, a sitting room, or alongside the Upland Pride label (U348) for a coordinated rose display from the same lithographer and era.
A wonderful gift for a rose lover, a vintage floral decor collector, a Sunkist or California citrus enthusiast, or anyone drawn to the warmth of roses rendered at their most generous.
A note on crate label collecting: Original lithographic crate labels from this era are increasingly scarce. NOS examples like this one — never used, never folded, in original unused condition — represent the best of what survives. Collectors prize them for their graphic quality and the window they open onto a vanished chapter of American agricultural and commercial history.
